This thesis focuses on the issue of Czech drama in the twenties of the 20th century. Specifically, it focuses on the repertoire of the National Theatre. In next chapters, dramas are selected that were written by the Czech writers others than the Čapek brothers and introduced in the twenties of the 20th century. Three thematic pairs of dramas were chosen from this limited selection for the purpose of further analysis and comparison. The core and most important elements are the analysis and comparison of pairs of dramas whereas every pair composes of one successful and one unsuccessful drama. All dramas were introduced at the National Theatre in the twenties and all of them were considered as an average when compared to the work of the Čapek brothers. Furthermore, the analysis and comparison of every pair is accompanied by the contemporary critics and reviews published in the newspapers. Based on the comparison of both successful and unsuccessful dramas that are thematically close, the thesis outlines the information on most probable reason why every individual drama was successful or unsuccessful with the audience, on what was popular among the audience, on the contemporary trends and on the common taste of average...
F. A. Šubert 1849 - 1915
Drexler, Otto ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Beneš, Zdeněk (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the biography of one important personality at the end of the 19th century - František Adolf Šubert, who was in the post of the Director of National Theatre in Prague in years 1883-1900. The main focus of the thesis is Šubert's public life and his career, as well as on his position within Czech cultural society, in the wider context of the era of that time changing Czech society and theatrical culture perception. It deals with the question, why F. A. Šubert was a subject of criticism from the journalists already during his active career as a director, and why he has never been recognized as one of the let's say "cultural heroes" of that epoch. The base of the work lies in the spring of the year 1900 - which was the year of Šubert's abdication (together with the whole theatre management). The work deals also with Šubert's personal life, which influenced his ideas and persuasion, too. This thesis is based on the then print, pieces of specialized and memoir literature, partly also archival materials (the access to the last mentioned was due to several factors rather limited). Palasová, Tereza ; Riedlbauch, Václav (advisor) ; Boukal, Petr (referee)
The work compares available pieces of information about the management of the National Theatre and the Prague State Opera before and after the merger. The work does not aim to formulate final conclusions about the merger, as this extensive process is only in its early stages of development. The aim is to organize unsorted information about opera sphere in Prague, to analyse results achieved so far, to create a comparison with the previous status, and conclude author's own assessment of the direction of the transformation process. The merger is examined from several perspectives. Firstly, the author surveys the economic results and indicators in the long term horizon and interprets them in terms of the organizations themselves, but also in context of the cultural sector and public finance of the Czech Republic. The author draws information on the economic situation mainly from secondary documents, such as annual reports, management conceptions and also internal documents that were provided to the author by economic department of the National Theatre. In addition to economic impacts, the author also looks at other aspects of the merger, which are more qualitative -- such as dramaturgy or changes concerning employees. The author has received primary information for this purpose through personal interviews with current or former employees. In conclusion, the author presents the intentions of the institutions' leadership, as well as its visions for the near future.
